Tracie courageous Scottish general who is not naturally

Tracie Barraclough               The Supernatural in Macbeth Mrs.LassiterEnglish 10 G Bell04 December 2017   In Shakespeare’s tragedy of Macbeth there are supernatural occurrences. It dramatises the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. Macbeth is a courageous Scottish general who is not naturally inclined to commit evil deeds, yet he deeply desires power and advancement. The effects of the supernatural occurrences make Macbeth and his wife kill others and themselves. One of the first supernatural occurrences are the three witches. They tell Macbeth he will be king “All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be hereafter”1.3.50) this leads to Macbeth’s ambition. Macbeth then tells his wife and this leads to her telling him to kill Duncan to speed things up.This then leads Macbeth to murder other people “The eye wink at the hand ,yet let that be.Which the eye fears, when it is done ,to see.”(2.1.32) Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo’s family but Fleance escapes. Another supernatural occurrence in Macbeth is when he sees the dagger when it was not really there. He imagines the dagger leading him toward the king’s chamber.”is this a dagger which I see before me,The handle toward my hand?Come let me clutch thee!”(2.1.52/23)The vision of the dagger inviting Macbeth to kill Duncan is very symbolic also. First of all, it can be said that this invisible dagger is the embodiment of Macbeth’s guilty conscience. The invisible supernatural occurrences in the play keep appearing. For example,Lady Macbeth sees the blood spot on her hand when it is not really there.”out damned spot! out,I say! (2.1.1/32) the blood on her hands was like a stain of guilt.     The last supernatural occurrence is the bloody ghost of Banquo.Macbeth is the only one who sees the bloody ghost of Banquo at the dinner.”the table’s full.(3.4.47)Banquo has come back to haunt Macbeth for killing him and no one else sees the bloody ghost so they all think Macbeth has gone mad.The ghost reappears later.”Avaunt, and quit my sight! Let the earth hide thee!”(3.4.94) Macbeth really wants the ghost to go away but Banquo’s ghost is not giving up. These supernatural occurrences make Macbeth and his wife kill others and themselves. The ambition of Macbeth’s wife leads him to kill Duncan and leads to the death of characters in the play. The witches cause Macbeth to tell his wife and his wife tells him to kill Banquo.Macbeth sees the dagger that nobody else sees because he is guilty and is now going crazy.Macbeth sees the bloody ghost of Banquo because he is insane by guilt.Guilt can make you go crazy and see things that others do not.
